Origins of Tantra & Yoga

Tantra evolved into a spiritual practice to heal, hone and transform the human body and mind in order to liberate them from pain and suffering and open them to divine bliss. Tantra grew out of early shamanistic worship of the linga (phallus) and yoni (womb) into a developed ideology of Shiva and Shakti, polarities of nature and creation, the Divine masculine and feminine forces.

Yoga emerged from Tantra. Beyond worship of Shiva and Shakti, people sought to more intimately understand themselves and the great mystery of existence. There are many yoga forms today involving poses, meditation, chanting and visual symbols. They all stem from ancient Tantric practices.

Yoga is like the wings and Tantra, like the body, of a colourful-feathered bird. Their origins are intrinsically linked as well as their intentions even though there are variations. They give a path to unify body, mind and spirit from within, to liberate the soul and attain union with the Divine.
